Death of Oberlin Professor Pipo Nguyen-duy

Pipo Nguyen-duy was found dead alongside his wife in an off-campus residence.

Pipo Nguyen-duy, a professor of studio art and photography at Oberlin College and Conservatory and a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, was found dead at his off-campus home on Wednesday. He was 64 years old. Nguyen-duy was found alongside Tran Thi Phong, his wife, both of whom suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Local police reported that the male victim was discovered on the first floor of the residence, while the female victim was located on the second floor.

The suspect in the case, Daniel Jones, formerly known as Asia Nguyen-duy, appeared in court on Thursday afternoon. Jones was arrested on Wednesday after an Oberlin resident reported a disheveled man at her front door. According to court proceedings, Jones had told the resident to record a video of him for social media, during which he identified himself and claimed to be escaping a cult. Jones allegedly told officers that he had killed his family and provided the address of his father’s residence.

Jones has been charged in connection with the double homicide. During the court appearance, he appeared in handcuffs and ankle shackles. A bail of $3 million was set, and he was ordered to be held in jail. The prosecutor noted that Jones had previously told officers that his actions were taken on his own accord.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. While police responded to a vehicle fire in a parking lot involving a car registered to Jones approximately 90 minutes before the bodies were discovered, the motive for the shooting remains under investigation. Prosecutors stated that the weapon allegedly used in the shooting has not yet been located by authorities.

Nguyen-duy had served as a faculty member at Oberlin College since 1998. The college has expressed sadness regarding the event. Jones's mother, residing in Oregon, informed investigators that her son is psychotic and requires medication.

Takeaway: Pipo Nguyen-duy was a Guggenheim Fellowship recipient and a professor at Oberlin College.
