Jaguar Unveils Electric Type 01 at New York Event

British car brand Jaguar has unveiled its electric Type 01, marking a return for the manufacturer with a design intended to stand apart from the homogeneity often found in modern electric vehicles. Revealed at an exclusive launch event in New York, the Type 01 serves as the production version of the widely discussed Type 00 concept car from 2024. It is the brand’s second fully electronic production vehicle, aiming to pay homage to the Jaguar legacy while establishing a new era for the company.

The vehicle features a four-door aluminium body characterized by a long bonnet, a rear-leaning stance, and thin headlights set within its grille. It lacks a rear window and displays strong body lines that extend from the Impossible Panel on its rear quarter. This specific panel, located above the rear wheel, consists of five intersecting surfaces that Jaguar’s design team noted computer programs previously deemed impossible to cold press in aluminium.

Jaguar managing director Rawdon Glover described the vehicle as a "Jaguar first," with the electric aspect secondary to the brand’s identity. He argued that classic electric vehicles often fall into a homogeneous type of design, whereas this model seeks to connect with people at an emotional level through its distinct aesthetic. The car utilizes the Jaguar Electric Architecture, a combination of systems and form, to achieve this differentiation.

The Type 01 is 1.4 metres high, placing it firmly in grand touring territory, and measures 5.2 metres in total length. Its proportions include a deep rear overhang and a shallower front overhang, with frameless doors that close directly against the body. Exterior design lead Alexey Andreev highlighted the four-fold headlights as a distinguishing element, designed to be recognizable from a distance when hemmed in by the darker tones of the surrounding panels.

According to Glover, the approach taken with the Type 01 was intended to create a design and aesthetic that truly connects with people. The vehicle’s low height and long bonnet evoke heritage Jaguar models, while the Impossible Panel and unique shoulder and cant rails stem from the rear-quarter panel’s complex configuration. The report notes that this design strategy pushes the car to be distinct from other electric vehicles currently on the market.
