New York City doubles artist grants to ten thousand dollars

Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and Cultural Affairs Commissioner Diya Vij announced a significant increase in direct support for individual artists, raising the maximum grant amount from five thousand dollars to ten thousand dollars. This adjustment marks the first change to this specific funding stream in approximately twenty years. The Department of Cultural Affairs will distribute the additional funds through the borough’s arts councils, which serve as regrant partners and manage annual open calls for artists.

The total budget allocated for this initiative stands at three point five million dollars, covering all five boroughs cumulatively. Mayor Mamdani emphasized that artists are working New Yorkers who face the same housing and grocery costs as the general population. He noted that a grant frozen at five thousand dollars for two decades has lost value annually, and the doubling of funds is intended to help ensure that the creators who define the city’s culture can afford to remain.

Commissioner Vij, who was named the city’s next commissioner in February and is the first person of South Asian descent to hold the role, explained that the previous amount was insufficient for completing full projects. She stated that the goal is to prevent artists from going into debt to finish their work, acknowledging that while the cost of living has risen, support has not kept pace. The Department of Cultural Affairs remains the largest municipal funder of arts and culture in the United States.

In addition to the increased grant amounts, past and present recipients of arts councils funding will have access to a dedicated shopping day at Materials for the Arts once a month. This benefit applies to all current and previous grant winners, providing them with regular opportunities to acquire materials for their practices.

Applications are currently open for four of the borough arts councils, with deadlines varying by location. The Bronx Council on the Arts has a deadline of October 30, while the Brooklyn Arts Council closes on October 11. The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s deadline is November 12, and the New York Foundation for the Arts in Queens closes on November 17. Applications for the Staten Island Arts council will open in November.
